This year’s Paul Ramsey Award Dinner is in the books! What a terrific time we had!! People began gathering around 5:30 in the evening, and we enjoyed seeing old friends and making new ones during the Reception Hour.
Soon, though, the chimes were rung and we moved to the Ballroom for dinner. Bailey Sanford, a current Fellow of our Paul Ramsey Institute offered a moving invocation, and we enjoyed a delicious meal.
I won’t run through a play-by-play of the whole program, but I would like to highlight a few quotes (below) from our speakers that I’m continuing to reflect on. Below that are a few photos from the evening (click on any image to see a larger version). I hope that together they will give you a flavor of how special the event was.
We are deeply grateful for all who attended and only wish that more of our friends and supporters could have joined in the festivities.
We are finalizing the date for the 2019 Dinner, so watch this space for an announcement and then please be sure to mark your calendar and save that date!
Quotes from the Evening
“Children and former children all grieve no matter the circumstances that lead to them losing a relationship with their mother or father.”
— Katy Faust, Founder of Them Before Us
“Paul Ramsey, for whom this award is named, . . . had enormous respect for medicine and for physicians, for what he thought of and described as ‘the covenantal nature of medicine,’ and for doctors like Dr. Curlin who take that covenantal nature seriously.”
— Gilbert Meilaender, Ph.D., Paul Ramsey Institute Scholar
“I look around this room and I see the Paul Ramsey Institute Fellows, and I have great confidence that they are going to go on and practice medicine with beauty and integrity, with fidelity to covenant, with a beautiful witness to what a sacred work medicine is, what a sacred privilege it is to show up to, walk alongside with, and attend to those who are suffering and those who are sick.”
— Farr A. Curlin, M.D., 2018 Recipient of the Paul Ramsey Award for Excellence in Bioethics
“The Center for Bioethics and Culture is an outworking of Dr. Ramsey’s teachings, an active proponent of his beliefs, vigorously striving for the good of humanity in our culture . . . Its reason for existence is that we all belong to each other. If the CBC doesn’t help those in need, who will?”
— Dan Lahl
